Opening arguments began Wednesday in the trial of the only person criminally charged in the police raid that killed Breonna Taylor — but the allegations are not directly related to her death.

Former Louisville officer Brett Hankison faces three counts of first-degree wanton endangerment, a low-level felony, for shots that entered a neighboring apartment during the March 13, 2020, raid on Taylor’s home. No one has been charged in Taylor’s killing, which fueled national protests that summer over police use of force, particularly against Black Americans.
