'Trash Trout' installed in Reynolda Village to help keep Yadkin River clean
BACK HERE IN THE TRIAD, THE YADKIN RIVERKEEPER NOW HAS A NEW TOOL TO HELP KEEP THE WATERWAY CLEAN. THE GROUP INSTALLED A DEVICE CALLED A TRASH TROUT AND SILAS CREEK AND REYNOLDS VILLAGE, THE YADKIN RIVERKEEPER IS PARTNERING WITH WAKE FOREST UNIVERSITY AND ASHEVILLE, GREENWORKS FOR THIS PROJECT. THE TRASH TROUT WILL FILTER LITTER OUT OF THE CREEK IN ORDER TO KEEP OUR DRINKING WATER SUPPLY IN THE YADKIN RIVER HEALTHY. IT’S ABOUT FOUR BY EIGHT FEET AND IT FLOATS ON TOP OF THE WATER AND IT ACTS KIND OF LIKE A PASTA STRAINER, SO IT’S GOING TO COLLECT THE TRASH. BUT ALLOW THE WATER AND WILDLIFE TO MOVE THROUGH. SO IT’S NOT GOING TO CATCH FISH OR, YOU KNOW, ANYTHING ELSE. IT’S GOING TO CATCH ALL THE FLOATING LITTER. PRIMARILY PLASTIC POLLUTION IS WHAT WE SEE ON TOP OF THE WATER. AND THIS PROJECT IS PART OF AN ENVIRONMENTAL ENHANCEMENT GRANT RECEIVED BY WATER KEEPERS CAROLINA THE GOAL IS TO INSTALL 15 TRASH TROUTS THROUGHOUT
