IT SPARKED EXCITEMENT IN GREENSBORO, WHERE SHE STOPPED BY NORTH CAROLINA STATE UNIVERSITY FOR A MODERATED DISCUSSION WITH AA GRADUATES AND STUDENTS. THIS IS PART OF KAMALA HARRIS’S FIGHT FOR OUR FREEDOMS COLLEGE TOUR. THE SECOND STOP IN A MONTH LONG SERIES OF VISITS. WXII 12. JOSHUA DAVIS WAS ON CAMPUS FOR US TODAY AND SHARES SOME OF WHAT THE VP SAID. THIS IS THE VICE PRESIDENT’S SECOND STOP ON HER TOUR. SHE PREVIOUSLY SPOKE AT HAMPTON UNIVERSITY IN VIRGINIA. BUT DESPITE THE CHANGE OF VENUE, HER TALKING POINTS REMAINED THE SAME. ADVOCATING FOR GUN SAFETY, ABORTION ACCESS AND MORE. THE LEAD UP TO VICE PRESIDENT KAMALA HARRIS’S ARRIVAL AT NORTH CAROLINA AA UNIVERSITY WAS FILLED WITH DANCING, SINGING AND MULTIPLE SPEAKERS FROM NOTABLE AGGIE ALUMNI LIKE CONGRESSWOMAN ALMA ADAMS AND TERRENCE J, AS WELL AS OTHER FIGURES LIKE GOVERNOR ROY COOPER AND CONGRESSWOMAN KATHY MANNING. WHEN SHE FINALLY MADE HER APPEARANCE. IN IT WAS TO THE ROAR OF THOUSANDS OF AGGIES DURING THE DISCUSSION, HARRIS SPOKE ABOUT ISSUES LIKE AFFORDABLE HIGHER EDUCATION AND VOTING RIGHTS, ENCOURAGING STUDENTS IN THE ROOM THAT IF THESE ARE THINGS THEY’RE CONCERNED ABOUT, THEY NEED TO MAKE THEIR VOICES KNOWN AT THE BALLOT BOX. WHEN YOU ALL VOTE, IT SCARES SOME FOLKS. BUT WHEN YOU VOTE, YOU HAVE THE ABILITY TO DETERMINE THE FUTURE OF OUR COUNTRY IN A WAY THAT MIGHT CHALLENGE A LOT OF PEOPLE’S NOTIONS ABOUT WHAT IS POSSIBLE, ABLE AND WHO CAN POSSIBLY DO IT. SHE ALSO FIELDED QUESTIONS FROM STUDENTS, SOME FOCUSING ON CONCERNS LIKE GUN VIOLENCE, REFERENCING RECENT INSTANCES ON U-N-C CHAPEL HILL’S CAMPUS. AT THE END OF THE DISCUSSION, SHE HAD THIS TO SAY TO STUDENTS. YOU WERE BORN TO LEAD. THAT’S WHY YOU’RE ALL HERE RIGHT NOW. Vice President Harris encouraged students in the room that if these are things they're concerned about, they need to make their voices known at the ballot box. At the end of the discussion, she said to students, "You were born to lead. That's why you're all here right now. And so just get out there. Own your power. Tell your truth right now, because Your country needs you. And I say that as vice president of the United States." "They're also the particular choice of attending HBCU's to give the vice president a chance to offer her message to the audiences of those colleges." According to Dinan, the Democratic presidential ticket needs a strong voter turnout, especially with younger audiences. "It's important for the Democratic National Party to invest in North Carolina, not just with an eye toward mobilizing voters for the presidential tickets," Dinan said. "There's also a critical gubernatorial race and other races going on."
