Winston-Salem: Walk of Fame medallions to be unveiled Friday
The City of Winston-Salem will honor those who have given back to the arts and entertainment world who are no longer here.
Walk of Fame medallions will be unveiled as a dedication to all that they did.
Each honoree will be recognized with a bronze medallion embedded in the sidewalk outside the Benton Convention Center on the Cherry Street sidewalk.
Both 2020 and 2021 honorees will become additions to the Winston-Salem Arts, Culture, and Entertainment Memorial Walk of Fame. The honorees lived in Winston-Salem for at least five years and made major contributions to music, dance, theater, writing, visual arts, motion pictures, television, and radio.
WXII 12 spoke with City of Winston-Salem Mayor Allen Joines about what he hopes the recognition means to the families of those being honored.
“A feeling of satisfaction. A feeling of pride obviously. In a way that their loved ones will always be remembered in a tangible way in our city, right there by the convention center, where there will be thousands of individuals by there on a regular basis,” Joines said.
Author, poet, and actress Dr. Maya Angelou is one of the 10 honorees. Angelou was a friend of Mayor Joines and was a distinguished professor at Wake Forest University.
Nominations for the Walk of Fame are accepted once a year and reviewed by a committee with diverse backgrounds and disciplines. That committee then recommends honorees to city leaders.
The ceremony on Friday will be held at 10:30 a.m.
